While at JSU, Rita began her Radio Broadcasting career at 88.5 FM WJSU where she served as an announcer and producer. After graduating, Rita joined NPR-affiliate, Mississippi Public Broadcasting where her career flourished tremendously. After only two years there, she was promoted to produce and host 3-5 weekly morning radio shows, ranging from tourism, law, politics, to everyday technology. She interviewed 100s of people in a 4-year span while shedding light impartially on a multitude of topics that particularly affect Mississippians and Southerners. In 2013, Rita made a sharp career turn and began doing stand-up comedy. In 2017, Rita decided to commit fully to standup comedy, and the doors of opportunity flew open. She met comedy mogul, Kevin Hart, and was featured on Season 2 of “Hart of the City,” a TV series on Comedy Central. In May 2018 and May 2019, she appeared on truTV’s “Laff Mobb’s Laff Tracks,” where her comedy sets have accumulated over 4 million views. She has opened for major acts such as the late Dick Gregory, Bill Bellamy, Sheryl Underwood, and currently tours with Rickey Smiley and Cedric the Entertainer. The publication Thrillist, crowned her the “Best Undiscovered Comedian in Mississippi” in 2018. After her truTV appearance and a stellar performance at the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem, NY, Rita’s mentor, Bob Sumner, introduced her to the Buchwald Agency in New York. She signed with the Agency in August 2019. For the first time in her life, she moved away from Mississippi and relocated to Brooklyn, NY. Her ties to Mississippi are still very strong. She is the face of Patty Peck Honda Car Dealership where she writes and films 5-6 commercials for the company monthly. She is the star of two viral Jackson International Airport commercials, which she wrote as well. She is still remotely socially active and uses her comedy to raise awareness on various issues in her home state.
Rita splits her time as a comedian and musician. In 2019, she traveled to Nigeria and Tanzania, Africa as a musical ambassador with the band, Teneia via the American Music Abroad Program. She recently released her first satirical single, “Rock Me Like a Pothole,” which has gone viral on multiple social media platforms. Her latest single is titled, “Quarantine Shuffle,” a satirical pandemic awareness song. She also co-produced the current theme song with Teneia for the city of Jackson, “City with Soul (My City)”. September 2019 in Jackson, MS, she came out of the closet at her farewell comedy show, “Sipp on this Tea,” and now lives freely and openly (a luxury she has never had while living in the South). Her comedy special, “Sipp on this Tea” is currently available on Vimeo and all digital music platforms. With diligence, humility, and divine guidance, Rita hopes to continue healing the world through social awareness, comedy and music.
